The Op Games Road to Gen Con 2023 Miniature Market - St. Louis, MO

The fifth stop on The Op Games Road to Gen Con took our crew to St. Louis, where Miniature Market hosted the biggest crowd we’ve seen so far — 20 players!

The participants who converged at the store on Saturday, March 18th, came from miles around, representing Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, Illinois, and Michigan. Many were members of the Op’s Discord server and had already “met” in the Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances forum. For those players, this was a first chance to play games face-to-face with people they’d been discussing strategy with for weeks already. Some were well-experienced players of the game, others had just picked it up recently, and many arrived as “teams” that had traveled to, and prepared for, the event together.

With so many participants, the bracket system required five rounds of play — each with ten games played simultaneously — adding up to a whopping 50 matches (though two players dropped from the final round, so only 49 games were officially recorded).

The metagame going into the day had been dominated by teams built around Ariel and Sulley. With Scar being added in the Leading the Charge expansion, players now had access to a character designed to counter the taunt-and-heal strategy. Would we see a definitive shift in the environment? Fans at the tables and in the discussion threads on Discord were keeping watch to see if a new dominant team would emerge.

As it turned out, Sulley was the second most played character of the day, making room for Dr. Facilier at the top of the list. More surprising was the win rate for the two characters, with Dr. Facilier boasting 56.1% in the win column, while Sulley showed signs of decline with only 43.8%. Despite the decline of Sulley, Ariel performed well, winning 55% of her games, showing the players’ gradual will to run the two defensive characters separately.

Scar, on the other hand, only showed up in 10 teams and pulled in a paltry 30% win rate. As the designer of the game, I’m inclined to attribute this to Scar being fairly new to players; we’ve been running teams with him in the playtesting community for around a year now, and there’s no question that he’s capable of putting up aggressive numbers.

A sortable spreadsheet of the full team rosters and matches list can be found here.

Apart from the turnout and subtle changes in the strategic approaches, this event was also notable in that it was the first The Op Games Road to Gen Con event to be live-streamed on YouTube. Miniature Market kept the camera rolling on a feature match table from start to finish, while the live chat on Miniature Market’s YouTube page gave fans an additional way to interact with The Op and other fans.

While eventual winner Adam Friedman gave a master class on how to maintain a seat at the feature match table, there were several moments along the way where things looked like they could break for either player. In round 2, Jonathan Stodola managed to upgrade Davy Jones TWICE to shake up the board with Kraken damage, while Adam’s Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey built up to a 10-Broom Magical Mob to take out Davy Jones in a single swing. Closing out that match, Adam came back from what he initially thought was an insurmountable deficit to win by a single point.

After the match, Adam gave his thoughts on what he liked most about piloting Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey: between his Skill and card sequencing, Mickey is capable of adding 7 Brooms to his stack in a single turn, meaning that mid-game, he can come back from a KO and immediately take down nearly any rival with damage on them. Meanwhile, Jonathan cited Scar as the character he was most nervous to face, as the villainous lion is capable of racking up plenty of “unearned” victory points while also shutting down Davy Jones’ ability to recover HPs throughout a game.
